...life inside the loop; a short film

Short film documenting the methodology of experimentation through diagrammatic setup + results

The Video Trip:
Analysis

"I can see into infinity”
The seemingly impenetrable wall whose interface had been transformed by the projection gave rise to a new level of boundless interaction. Focus now drawn toward the regression of images, the user’s experience fluctuated between near (physical shadows) and far (regressed images) following the ‘flash’ nature of the loop.

”Im trying to catch up with myself”
In reference to the delayed relationship between the initial physical movement and the looped image, catalytic reaction was highlighted. A direct awareness of ones actions were noted, further ‘actions’ were tested in order to see the results.

“There's a dialogue between the two... I can touch myself”
Received with awe and excitement, A further relationship had been discovered; the possibility of the physical self making connections with the digital self. This bought about a further conversation regarding levels of consciousness and ones seeming temporality.

"The video trip.. Life inside the loop"

Set with the desire to develop a greater mutual user/environmental relationship, the design of an ephemeral framework via a simple user interface aided in the observation and exploration into interaction. I began to examine the relationship between movement and projected images both physically and digitally through the documentation of visual stills and description.

Boomerang 1974 Richard Serra + Nancy Holt

"Boomerang" (1974), is a video by Richard Serra in which the artist taped Nancy Holt as she talks and hears her words played back to her after they have been delayed electronically. Because of the delay, Holt finds it very difficult to talk and even think. In Serra's words, "[This] is a tape which analyzes its own discourse and processes as it is being formulated. The language of Boomerang, and the relation between the description and what is being described, is not arbitrary. Language and image are being formed and revealed as they are organized."

Design Charette @ Doodle Bar, Battersea with Will Alsop

...a day of doodling!!

Courtesy of our Professor of Architecture, Will Alsop, we spent a fun (and charcoal fuelled!) day of design and exploration through doodling; culminating in an open review of works completed.

Studio setup...

I have officially set up in the studio!

Developing on from the table top tv monitor,  I have introduced a ceiling mounted projector connected to the digital video camera to capture the experimentation on a greater interface. The 140 x 180cm view allows for both a platform for physical interaction/disruption as well as greater clarity in recording /viewing. Currently drawing up a methodical set of experiments and results, I aim to document both action and effect...

Visual feedback experimentation

Still image of set up: playback of footage of visual feedback: (photo: Tina Zacharia)

"Video feedback is the process that starts and continues when a video camera is pointed at its playback video monitor. The image from the camera is delayed slightly in time as it travels through the extensive circuitry of the recording system and then is output to the video playback monitor" Wikipedia

The natural progression of research lead the experimentation into visual feedback using an optical input (video camera) and optical output (TV receiver). Connecting the video camera to the AV socket and pointing directly to the monitor, light received is amplified and sent by the cable to the monitor, projecting electron beams. The image is then captured again and fed back to the monitor hence a continuous loop. The resulting images were dependant on the settings of both camera and monitor to include angle, focus, distance, contrast and brightness.

Photos and videos of results to come!!

Re-interpreting the Droste Effect

The Droste effect known as mise en abyme in art is the effect of a picture appearing within itself, in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear.

Infinite Regression...

The appearance is recursive: the smaller version contains an even smaller version of the picture, and so on. Only in theory could this go on forever; practically, it continues only as long as the resolution of the picture allows, which is relatively short, since each iteration geometrically reduces the picture's size. It is a visual example of a strange loop, a self-referential system of instancing which is the cornerstone of fractal geometry.

Experimenting with the various settings of my laptops integrated camera, I pointed the screen to a mirror displaying the recursive loop of image play/feedback.
