Presenting....'10 Positions' Public Presentation + Exhibition Opening 27/01/2013

...Showcasing work by students from the MA Architecture and MA Urban Design courses at UCA Canterbury School of architecture. Projects spanning from the microcosmic scale of insects and molecules to the macro scale of global, socio-economic and political forces. A range of media including drawings, models, kinetic constructions and 1:1 spatial installations has been used to investigate themes of observer engagement and human perception .
Collectively the projects can be read as an exploration of how complex and intense interventions might be inserted into pre existing contexts in a manner that simultaneously affords critical debate and experiential delight....

Layering projections

Following my prior studies and experimentation with varied materials, the most successful in transmitting light through layers has proven to be the medium gauze linen; excellent in allowing for fluid movement as well as the ability to be pulled taunt. The above video illustrates the diffusion of image projection through the 3 hand made screens.

Riot Iconography - "Layering the loop"

Researching into how visual stimuli (namely moving textual and flashing imagery) respond the feedback loop, I set up a sample reel in order to test various scenarios, alongside adapted setup (i.e height / angle)

 Feeding digital titles into the feedback loop; exploration into the beginnings of subliminal messaging (using digital cameras existing inbuilt title / information layer) with intention to overlay into a double loop set up.

Set with the desire to develop a greater mutual user/environmental relationship, the design of an ephemeral framework via a simple user interface aided in the observation and exploration into interaction. I began to examine the relationship between movement and projected images both physically and digitally through the documentation of visual stills and description.

Visual feedback experimentation

"Video feedback is the process that starts and continues when a video camera is pointed at its playback video monitor. The image from the camera is delayed slightly in time as it travels through the extensive circuitry of the recording system and then is output to the video playback monitor" Wikipedia

The natural progression of research lead the experimentation into visual feedback using an optical input (video camera) and optical output (TV receiver). Connecting the video camera to the AV socket and pointing directly to the monitor, light received is amplified and sent by the cable to the monitor, projecting electron beams. The image is then captured again and fed back to the monitor hence a continuous loop. The resulting images were dependant on the settings of both camera and monitor to include angle, focus, distance, contrast and brightness.
